 Transition

During your child's IEP the team may discuss your child's TRANSITION into life after school.  This will happen if your child will be 14 or older during the time frame of the IEP.  It may occur at an earlier age if the team feels it is necessary for your child's success in life.

There are seven areas of transition that can or will be discussed during the IEP meeting.  These seven areas are:

  • Jobs and Job Training
    • This can include volunteering (helping grandparents, volunteer baseball/sports coach, taking apart engines, etc.) or a job that the child currently holds or wishes to hold in the future.
  • Recreation and Leasure
    • This can include anything your child would like (or currently likes) to do after school and/or on weekends (sports, exercise, going to the movies, etc.).
  • Home/Independent Living
    • This can include helping with family cooking, or family home repairs (working in the garage, changing oil, etc.).  This section includes things that are done independently at home without help.
  • Community Participation
    • This includes any activities that your child is currently participating in (clubs, church, fishing contests, sports, etc.) or would like to participate in in the the future.
  • Post-Secondary Training and Learning Opportunities
    • This includes any classes that your child is currently taking and what classes need to be taken to meet your child's future goals.  The team may ask your child where he or she would like to go to school after they graduate for high school and what type of job they plan to obtain.
  • Related Services
    • This includes any services that your child may be receiving currently (speech therapy, adaptive physical education, occupational therapy, etc.).
